In the City. We were considering Little Italy, but after reading about how noisy it is (constant trains throughout the nigh), I'm a bit skittish. Perhaps closer to the Marina?

Solana Beach
This is near the coaster and the beach! May be the best of both worlds, though the commute for Kate to the city might be a dealbreaker.
